ANA MOURA (POR) • DEOLINDA (POR)

In the year of the European Capital of Culture, when Maribor and Guimaraes share this prestigious cultural title, one night on the Main stage will be dedicated to the Portuguese superior creativity.  We will get the chance to see two amazing performances: Deolinda, new artists on the Portuguese scene that already have two platinum albums and several international awards; and one of the main artists of fado, Ana Moura, the next big star of the Portuguese tradition.

ANA MOURA (POR)

Ana Moura (vocals), Angelo Freire (Portuguese guitar), Pedro Soares (acoustic guitar), Andre Moreira (acoustic bass)

After many years of performing at the Maria’s house of fado, Ana gained knowledge and experience the traditional way and met her current music partner, Jorge Fernando. Jorge, who was the first acoustic guitar for Amalio Rodrigues for many years, is an extraordinary song writer and a visionary producer that contributed to Ana’s success. Her first album Guarda-me a vida na mão was a surprise for the critics and the audience and the album’s first song Sou do fado placed Ana among classic fado artists and allowed her to start performing on international stages. A year later, she recorded a double album Aconteceu in which she combined the traditional fado and the ways in which to go around it. This album was more popular with the international audience since it won her a nomination for a Dutch Edison award and an invitation to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York. Her success continued with numerous concerts all around the world and a performance with Prince in 2010.

That year, Ana also received a prestigious Portuguese Golden Globe award for best singer and was nominated for best performer/artist by Songlines magazine in 2011. Additionally, Mezzo TV filmed a documentary about Ana. Today, Ana Moura is one of the most established and renowned fado singers in Portugal, known for her exceptional voice and a subtle sense for connecting with the audience.

Discography:
- 2003 - Guarda-me a vida na mão
- 2004 - Aconteceu
- 2007 - Para Além da Saudade
- 2009 - Leva-me aos Fados

DEOLINDA (POR)

Ana Bacalhau (vocals), Luís José Martins (classic guitar, ukulele, cavaquinho, guitalele, viola braguesa and vocals), Pedro da Silva Martins (music and lyrics, classic guitar and vocals), José Pedro Leitão (double bass, vocals)

For four years, Deolinda quartet has been dominating the Portuguese charts. Their first album Canção ao Lado was sold as four time platinum, and their second album Dois Selos e Um Carimbo, published in 2010, stayed and the top of the charts for a long time and has already reached the platinum numbers twice. The same year, they were chosen as best newcomer by the Songlines magazine.

Members of the group were born in the time after the stigma dictatorship had rubbed off and they soon moved away from the strong fado tradition, supported by the Salzar regime. Therefore, their version of fado is full of humour, irony and fast tempo. When performing live, members of Deolinda do not dress in black as traditional fado players do. They succeeded by combining excitement, old instruments and a lot of artistic passion and creating real stories from the music theatre, that have a rising action, grace and the main character: Deolinda!

Portugal’s Deolinda inhabits a very different Lisbon from the smoky fado houses and cobblestone streets. "We come from the suburbs of Lisbon," explains the singer Ana Bacalhau. "We sing about what we love and what we’ve observed and experienced. Suburbia is interesting in Lisbon even though it’s very impersonal, with big building. People talk from window to window and keep their regional traditions alive. You can often feel it the second you walk into an apartment.
